JOB SUMMARY



The Nursing Supervisor - Perioperative Services is responsible and accountable for the organization and supervision of the surgery department, surgical sterilization, surgical holding, recovery room, central services, and others as assigned by the CNE.. The Nursing Supervisor - Perioperative Services is delegated authority to develop and maintain the Hospital perioperative services in accordance with overall hospital policies. Although professional surgical practices are developed cooperatively with the Medical and other professional staff, the Supervisor retains authority over surgical practice in the assigned departments. Employee must agree to adhere to all provisions and requirements of the Corporation Compliance Plan and the Corporation Ethics Policy.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Patient Care Responsibilities

* Fulfill all the patient care responsibilities required by the appropriate professional scope of practice

* Coordinate the development of standards and protocols for perioperative services

* Give direct patient care as needed

* Schedule patient cases

* Prepare patient charts - including assembling H&P, EKG, Lab, and Radiology reports

* Conduct pre-operative interviews

* Act as a resource for patient care questions and concerns


Staff Responsibilities

* Facilitate the continuing education and professional development of perioperative services staff

* Be responsible for the development, teaching, implementation, and revision of staff competencies for the inpatient nursing departments

* Work with the Medical and Nursing staff to develop and maintain standards and protocols for all the perioperative services areas

* Maintain open communication with Medical and Nursing staff

* Utilize effective problem-solving and critical thinking skills to resolve conflicts and problems

* Nurture staff development of effective problem-solving and critical thinking skills

* Develop and periodically revise the orientation program for the perioperative service departments

* Be responsible for periodic evaluations of all staff

Nursing Supervisor - Perioperative Services

Unit Responsibilities

* Facilitate completion of staff schedules

* Coordinate daily staffing

* Facilitate maintenance of supplies and coordinate the evaluation and selection of equipment and products for the perioperative services departments

* Monitor maintenance contracts

* Negotiate pricing for equipment acquisition

* Coordinate development and periodic review of all policies/procedures

* Be responsible for hiring and maintaining optimum staff of qualified personnel based on surgical case profiles


ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Professional Responsibilities

* Maintain knowledge of current trends and practices in the areas of perioperative care appropriate to the perioperative services departments

* Maintain a sufficient knowledge base of the various supervisory functions to facilitate staff activities in perioperative departments

* Demonstrate initiative in seeking professional development

Administrative Responsibilities

* Maintain 24 hour accountability for perioperative services activities

* Prepare and administer the annual budgets for the perioperative services departments

* Collaborate with the accounting department to maintain the chargemasters for the perioperative services departments

* Report concerns and problems in the perioperative services departments to the CN or CEO promptly

* Attend all meetings as required by the CEO and/or CNE and communicate changes, concerns, and current information to the perioperative services staff

* Alert the Risk Manager of potential risks occurring in the perioperative services department

* Collaborate with the Risk Manager in finding ways to address areas of risk as required

* Recognize and address issues of quality assurance and improvement as required

* Prepare departmental reports as assigned

* Collaborate with the CQI director to develop and maintain CQI projects and tracking as required

* Actively participate in standing and/or ad hoc committees as required by the CEO and/or CNE

* Actively assist in activities or processes needed to fulfill the goals and mission of Shenandoah Medical Center

* Design goals for the perioperative services department that reflect the mission and philosophy of Medical Center

* Collaborate with perioperative and medial staff to assure cost-effective patient care

* Perform any other duties as required by the CEO and/or CNE

* Responsible loss control and safety issues within the department. Responsible for


* training department supervisors on safety and safety issues within the department, conducting and reporting safety meetings for the department, and orienting new department employees concerning safety.



Qualifications

Your Qualifications
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS

*Be able to lift/move 50 lbs (as required to help lift/move a patient weighing 225 lbs or more)
*Be able to sit, stand, walk, push/pull for an extended length if time up to six hours in an eight hour work shift
*Be required to work any shift and any day of the week during periods of increased patient load or urgent staffing needs
*Work in well-lighted, well-ventilated areas
*Be subject to disagreeable odors on a regular basis
*Be subject to computer glare and potential for repetitive motion related difficulties associated with computer/keyboard use
*Be subject to potentially severe hazards in the form of exposure to communicable diseases, radiation, antieoplastic medications, needle sticks, infectious wastes, and combative patients or visitors
*Be able to see, hear, and communicate effectively
*Be subject to stress due to management and administrative responsibilities

QUALIFICATIONS
Education
*Graduate of an accredited program for nursing and currently licensed to practice in the State of Iowa
*Complete the hospital orientation and competencies
*Complete any additional orientation, training, and competencies required by the CEO and/or CNE
Training and Experience
*Minimum of three (3) years of OR experience is required, more may be preferred
*Supervisory experience is preferred
*Must have demonstrated leadership and management skills
*Will be required to maintain BCLS certification
*ACLS and other certifications may also be required
